Parent Update October 2020

October 01, 2020

Dear Crusader Families,

New information has been released through the Iowa Department of Public Health giving guidance about masks and mitigating the spread of the Covid-19 virus.  People that are properly wearing masks will not be required to quarantine if they come into contact with someone who tests positive for Covid-19 that also was wearing a mask. This only holds true if BOTH people are properly wearing masks. The process of an initial contact tracing period will stay the same. We are hopeful that the number of students that need to quarantine a full 14 days will decrease based on communication with school staff on consistent mask wearing. Know that this step adds a layer to contact tracing so it may be necessary to keep students out of school until this step can be accomplished. This guidance does not guarantee your student will be excluded from having to quarantine if they wear a face mask.  We recognize that wearing masks may not be possible in every situation (eating, sports) or for some people, including those with sensory, cognitive, or behavioral issues. This new guidance does give us the opportunity to work together as a school and a community to keep our kids in school, on the field and on the court.

When the school year began we were hopeful that we could quickly return to a 5 day in-person schedule. Dealing with positive Covid-19 cases and students placed in quarantine by public health has proven to be challenging to manage. Our plan will be to return with in-person instruction on Wednesdays with a 12:40 dismissal time when we are confident the positive COVID-19 numbers will remain manageable. The community's positivity rate directly impacts this decision.  When this decision is made, we will give families notice. We truly are all in this together!
