Blank Park Zoo: Animals With Character
by Rachel Gunderson
January 17, 2012
Kathy McKee, from Blank Park Zoo, visited the Robert Deal Elementary to present a Character Counts Assembly on Friday, January 13, 2012. She brought in four different animals as her examples. The program was made possible because Mrs. Gunderson took a Blank Park Zoo class, "Zoo as a Teaching Tool (Habitats and Adaptations)" this past summer.
- She brought in a European ferret to talk about responsibility with a pet.
- An injured owl was brought out for citizenship, with doing the right thing when finding an injured animal in the wild.
- The gopher tortoise connected us to respect since many animals depend on the tortoise for survival.
- The last animal was a ball python snake to demonstrate fairness. Many people do not like snakes, but when you learn about them, they are not so bad. All students PreK – 6th grade had an opportunity to touch the snake after the assembly was over.
