PTO Aug. 3rd Meeting

by Tanya Hunt

August 12, 2010

Coon Rapids-Bayard Parent-Teacher Organization

MINUTES

August 3rd, 2010

The meeting was called to order by Karen Mohr with Julie Halbur, Karen Heck, Rhonda Lenz, Angie Oswald and Tanya Hunt present.

  1. Requests
    1. IDM Folders – Connie Ankenbauer submitted a request to purchase pocket folders with clasps to begin the IDM program at the elementary.  Each child will need a folder.  Angie made a motion to purchase the folders and Rhonda 2nd the motion.  Motion carried.
    2. Backpacks – Connie Ankenbauer submitted a request for some backpacks to keep on hand for the children of migrant workers.  Some start school with nothing and it would be good to have a few on hand.  If anyone has any clean used backpacks bring them to store in the PTO supply cabinet otherwise we can purchase a few gender neutral basic backpacks when we pick up school supplies for the cabinet.
    3. Read Well – Connie Strasser submitted a request for $305.90 to purchase more Read Well Kindergarten Student Storybooks so each child can have their own book when working in small groups.  Last year books had to be shared or copied and it is just better at that age if the children have their own.  Angie made a motion to fund the project and Julie 2nd the motion.  Motion carried.
  2. I.      School Supply Cabinet – Angie offered to pick up the supplies to stock cabinets at both schools.  Karen will get Angie the list of supplies suggested by the teachers and also from the school supply lists that are online.  Karen made a motion for Angie to purchase supplies and Tanya 2nd the motion.  Motion carried.
  3. II.    Crusader Gear – Mr. Stoffers requested that the PTO consider selling CRB gear.  We all thought this would be a good idea and agreed to sell gear that would be just CRB and not affiliated with any activity.  Angie shared some things from a magazine that had many different products to consider such as: foam fingers, boom sticks, mugs, pennants, megaphones, bags, etc.  Karen will talk to Mr. Stoffers about what kind of things are allowed at events and we will decide at our next meeting which things to order.  We will have to submit an order quickly to be able to sell things at the beginning of the year.  It was decided to send home an order form with kids and to also sell items at a few events throughout the year.  Karen will talk to Graphic Edge about doing a few designs for us to choose from for apparel.
  4. V.    Playground- From our playground surveys that were sent out last fall it was suggested that we paint some things on the playground.  Tanya has talked to a local artist who has done some similar work Gray’s Lake and with Whiterock Conservancy.  Tanya shared the photos Tara Lange sent.  The project would cost $500 plus the cost of paint.  Some ideas shared by PTO members for the playground were: area to play four square and hopscotch, painting panels outside four seasons, native animals and plants or a map of the U.S.  Angie made a motion to hire Tara for price of $500 plus supplies to paint the playground and Julie 2nd the motion.  Motion carried.  Karen will talk to Mr. Stoffers to make sure we have approval with the school and Tanya will set up a meeting with Tara at the school to finalize what will be painted and where it will go.
  5. Open House – The school open house is scheduled for August 19th.  We agreed having a booth there to represent PTO would be beneficial.  We would like to have a sign that showcases projects we have funded and things we have purchased, a suggestion box, a sign up sheet for parents, an email distribution list and a donation jar.  We would like to have something for the kids to welcome them back.  We decided to purchase 300 black and red popcorn megaphones. Angie will purchase the megaphones with caps and submit a reimbursement to Rhonda.  Tanya will work with Tara to have at least part of the playground finished to showcase the artwork.  Tanya will bring pictures of projects that we can attach to sign.  Tanya will check with Iowa State Bank to see if we can use their popcorn machine.  Karen will check to see if we can use popcorn packets from school.

Meeting was adjourned.  Next meeting will be Tuesday, August 10th at 7:00pm at Deal Elementary.
