Insect Zoo Visits 5th Grade Science
by Mr. Meyer
September 29, 2008
On Tuesday, September 23, Iowa State University Entomology department provided the 5th grade science students here at CR-B with hands on learning experience they’ll never forget! Angela, who had critters all shapes, sizes, and colors, led the presentation. The students were divided into small groups and had the chance to handle the creatures themselves. There were a variety of insects and arachnids presented, including: Hornworm Caterpillars, Mealworms, Darkling Beetles, Bess Bugs, Hissing Cockroaches, Chinese Praying Mantis, African Black Millipedes, Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula, Mexican Fireleg Tarantula, Martinique Pinktoe Tarantula, New Guinea Walking Stick, Vinegaroon, Emperor Scorpion, Native Arizona Scorpion, and the Tanzanian Tailless Whip Scorpion.
The presentation lasted about 90 minutes. It was an interactive lesson for the students; observing, asking questions, identifying body parts, deciding where their critters lived, how it survived, what they ate, and plenty more!
The Fifth Grade Class would like to thank Angela and Iowa State University for making this possible!

WOW! I had so much fun learning about insects! I wish we could have done it longer. Seeing them in real life was much better than reading a textbook. Our instructor, Angela was so inspirational. She was so impressed about how much we knew. Some of the bugs she brought were caterpillars, spiders, praeymantis and a lot of other things. It would probably take us a month to get all the stuff done. I hope she comes back again!
