2008 Family Reading Night

by Rena Shaw

April 26, 2008

Pirate Captain Stoffers wasn't too happy Tuesday night when he discovered that a "Boat Load" of pirates had invaded his territory and were in search of his secret treasure.  A couple of Stoffers own pirate's crew greeted the families as they arrived for Family Reading Night and handed out copies of the treasure map.   A 6th grade crew member was available to look over the map and then escorted the group to their first stop shown on their map.

One of the stops on the map was the land of RIF.  Any student can tell you that RIF stands for Reading Is Fun!  While they were at the land of RIF they got to add a book to their "loot".  They also got to do some other fun activities while they were there.  After 15 minutes Captain Stoffers got on the intercom and sent everyone to their next stop.

Another stop on the map was Book Bingo!  While at Book Bingo everyone got a card with words on it.  The story "Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies" by Carolyn Crimi was read.  Anytime during the story when a word was read that matched the one of the words on the card people would mark it off.  As soon as they got four words in a row they yelled "Ahoy, Matey!"  Loot for the first five places were given out.  The Loot included books, posters, and a bag of goodies.  Everyone that entered Book Bingo received a bookmark!

The next stop on the map was called Pirate Games.  This stop included games that the families could play together.  One game was a game of dice.  Many of the older students were familiar with the game as they had played it during library, so they got to teach the rest of their family how to play.  There was another pirate board game that could also be played.

One of the last stops on the map was the Pirate Picture and Treasure Room.  In this room the families got to have their pictures taken.  It was great to see all the families that came in their pirate outfits!  In the Pirate Treasure Room the families would choose a book from the treasure chests and read it together.  It was during this time that they discovered that they found Pirate Captain Stoffers true treasure of the evening. The treasure was: Getting to spend this time together and that reading is PRICELESS!
