Read Across America Day At Robert Deal
A Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration
by Rachel Gunderson
March 19, 2008
Read Across America was celebrated on Friday, March 7th at Robert Deal Elementary. This event calls for every child in every school in the United Statesto have a caring adult read with them. We also celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 104th birthday! The morning started out with a special appearance from The Cat in the Hat (Mr. Orlano)!
Next, the teachers entertained students with a special song about READING! Then, a game of Dr. Seuss BINGO was played led by “The Cat” and Mrs. Gunderson. Mrs. Friedrich’s class won the huge “Cat in the Hat” trophy for winning the BINGO game. Even though there was just one class that won the trophy, all students were rewarded with orange push-ups (donated by CRMU) to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. After the assembly, over 20 volunteers joined us to listen to all of the super readers at Deal Elementary. Volunteers came from E.T. Video, N.E.W., Coon Rapids Insurance, Garst, Advanced Laser Technologies, The City of Coon Rapids, and The Utilities. Each class took turns coming out to the lunch room to read. After reading, students received a certificate signed by The Cat in the Hat himself! Students also participated in RIFwith Mrs. Friedrich, where every student was able to pick out a book to take home – READING IS FUN! Elementary students and staff would like to thank all of the volunteers that participated in Read Across America Day!
