Class Description
Grade: Sophomores
Credits: 2 (full year)
Basic Communications is a two semester course required for sophomores. It is divided into two major areas of study: Speech and Composition
In Basic Communications speech, students are introduced to the world of oral communication. Students begin by taking a closer look at themselves and the process of intra-personal communication. They discover that "knowing themselves" is essential if they are to become effective interpersonal communicators. Through their analysis of themselves, they develop confidence and a greater ease in expressing their thoughts and feelings effectively to others-interpersonal communication. Through research, organization, and practice, they discover the needed skills that will make them effective communicators. Their research will often open doors of learning for themselves and their classmates giving them a better understanding of the world in which they live. During the course of study, they not only learn that it is important to be an effective speaker, but they must also exhibit good listening skills if they wish to succeed in life thus completing the communication cycle.
In Basic Communications, students are introduced to the world of written communication. Throughout the year, students review the fundamentals of writing sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Students are introduced to the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) creating narrative, descriptive, and explanatory forms of writing. The Six Traits of Writing (idea, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions) are also integrated into the curriculum. The traits fall in line with the writing process; helping to develop effective communicators through the written word.
