Standards and Benchmarks

Standard 1:  Science as inquiry

                    Benchmarks.  1.1  Students will identify questions and concepts that guide

                                                  scientific investigations.

                                            1.2  Design and conduct scientific investigations.                        

                                            1.3  Understand techniques and tools for inquiry 

Standard 2:  Understanding physical concepts

                    Benchmarks.  2.1  Understand the composition of  atoms.

2.2 Understand the composition of the nucleus.

2.3 Magnets attract and repel each other and certain kinds of other materials.

2.4 Electrical circuits provide a means of transferring energy.

2.5 Energy is transferred in many ways.

Standard 3:  Understanding life science concepts

                    Benchmarks.  3.1  Relate why evolution is a natural consequench of

                                                  interactions.

3.2 Understand the diversity of organisms.

3.3 Explain natural selection

3.4 Understand that resources determine the number of organisms an ecosystem can support.

3.5 Understand how behaviors have evolved through natural selection.                                                                                          

Standard 4:  Understand earth science concepts.

                    Benchmarks:  4.1  Students will understand the internal and external sources

                                                  of energy for the earth’s systems.

                                           4.2  Understand that global climate is determined by energy                                                                                                                                                                                                        .                                                  transfer  by the sun.

                                            4.3  Describe how the surface of the earth has undergone may

                                                    slow changes.
