Content (topics, unit titles)
|
This unit will help build basic money skills through functional presentation. Students will explore a topic that will be a part of their daily lives. Handling money, working with a budget, and exploring banking will be a part of this process. |
This unit will help students build basic math skills through real-life situations. This will help motivate reluctant learners since this will feature topics familiar to them as part of daily life. Experience in solving word problems is a part of this process. |
This unit will allow students to make comparisons of various menu items with regard to the amount of money they have available to spend. They will use real-life situations to help them understand the cost of eating in a public place and to require them to reconsider their choices to match the amount of money they have to spend. |
This unit will build a foundation for students to be able to independently measure the correct amount of ingredients needed when following a recipe. They will use real-life situations to help them understand the need for the accurate measurement of both wet and dry ingredients as they follow the directions given in the preparation of the items |

Skills (verbs)
|
Students will be able to name U.S. coins and bills, identify their values, read and write money amounts using symbols and decimal points, count money to determine total value and equivalent money amounts, figure the total cost of several items, and compute correct change. Students will identify the purpose of a budget, plan one, and make purchases by staying within the budgeted amount. Students will choose a bank, open a checking and savings account, use an ATM, and using credit. |
Students will determine individual pricing of items. They will calculate the price for purchasing multiple items of the same kind. They will find the total cost of several different items purchased. They will calculate the money saved by buying sale or reduced items rather than regularly priced items. They will calculate the additional money needed to pay entire bill, if they do not have enough money to pay for the items purchased.
|
Students will review a menu and price list. They will purchase items, based on the amount of money they have available to spend. They will calculate restaurant receipts to determine the total meal cost. They will determine whether change received is the correct amount coming. |
Students will learn the various units of dry and wet measurement. They will understand measuring spoons; both a teaspoon--from ¼ to a full teaspoon--and a tablespoon, and from ¼ to a full measuring cup. They will learn linear measurement—inch, foot, and yard. They will identify the capacity of standard containers—cup, pint, quart, half gallon, and gallon. They will produce a finished product from a recipe. |
